Dixfield Summer Theater

Dixfield Summer Theater owes its existence to Edwin Child who conceived and executed the   project. He raised funds, wrote publicity, acted, directed, built and painted scenery, sold tickets ... From a Dixfield Summer Theater program in 1951

Dixfield's summer theater was in existence for at least three years, as I have four programs from 1949, 1950, and 1951. The cast members were professional actors, including James Coco from stage, movies and television

     "PEG O' MY HEART"  1949

     "JOHN LOVES MARY" 1950

"THE FAMILY UPSTAIRS"  JULY 3 -JULY 7 1951

"THE LIFE OF RILEY" JULY 10 - JULY 15 1951

The advertisements are particularly interesting. Hotel Stanley and Howard's Store  - gone when the brick building on the corner of Main St and Weld St was demolished. The bank was located in that same building. A large clock faced Holmes' IGA Market (which is still in existence, thank goodness). That was my only source for keeping track of time.  G. O. . Gardner's drug store - a wonderful place - a little soda fountain with stools in the front - school supplies, notions and lotions, gifts, cards as well as prescription drugs filled in the back.

Before shopping centers and block stores, all your shopping needs could be filled in town.
