Abigail Ellis

Abigail Ellis married Edmund Maxham.
Records of the Wareham church contain a lengthy tale of the Muxon (Maxham etc.) family, although Abigail did the misbehaving. Accusations were first entered in the records on 7 Dec. 1753, and discussion of the matter continued for several months thereafter. Briefly summarizing the considerable testimony on the record, it seems that Abigail Muxom was frequently seen with one Dr. Joseph Benson, either in romantic embrace unbefitting persons unmarried to each other, or emerging from one or another private rendezvous. Furthermore, Abigail seems to have made little secret of her belief that Joseph Benson was the father of her son Lemuel. For some reason, the matter was laid to rest for some thirty years, only to be resurrected in 1783.
Formal letters of excommunication were passed by the church against Abigail on 23 July 1783.
