The Newspapers

According to the Maine Newspaper Archives in Fogler Library , University of Maine, the Dixfield Citizen had a run from 1887-1888. The four Dixfield newpapers I have are from 1887.

The same source says the Rumford Falls Times began in 1893. I have two copies from 1899.

According to The Dixfield Star - a Newsletter from the Dixfield Historical Society of 1996- "The Dixfield Citizen"  Vol 1, No. 1 was first issued on Jun 12, 1883, T.H. Thornton, editor

The first Dixfield Citizen newspaper I have is Vol. 1, No. 4 dated May 12, 1887, E.N. Carver, editor. I cannot explain the discrepancies in the dates.

The Dixfield Citizen was made from a single sheet of paper about 39 inches in length and 25.5  inches in width. It was printed on both sides. It was folded down, then from left to right.

The papers I have are deteriorating rapidly - I'm scanning and converting them to text files to preserve their content.
